What is Metal Art?

Jerri hand sketches each art creation onto sheet metal. She uses a variety of sheet metals, including steel, galvanized, copper, aluminum and stainless steel. She likes to utilize recycled metals, enjoying their unique color variations, when these metals are available. Once the drawing is complete, Jerri hand cuts each piece using a plasma cutter or a torch. Art made of multiple pieces of metal are then spot-welded or wire-welded together. Pieces are then cleaned and sanded if necessary. Horseshoe wreaths are made from real horseshoes that have been worn by horses. The shoes are cleaned, reshaped, welded together and then painted prior to being decorated. Jerri is also welding some small sculptures from recycled odd pieces of metal; watch for these creations on our website! Every piece of art you purchase from Cowgirl’s Designs will be signed by the artist and is a unique and original design!

Jerri welcomes the opportunity to create commissioned pieces of art or special projects for customers. If you have an idea in mind to commemorate a special event, to honor or memorialize a beloved animal friend or celebrate the beauty of nature, contact Jerri and she will be happy to discuss the details with you.

When making purchasing decisions, you may want to consider these facts about metal art:

  1. This work is not cut by a computer, it is hand cut and therefore, there may be some sharp edges.
  2. Aluminum, stainless steel and galvanized will require occasional cleaning but do not rust or change colors substantially due to exposure to weather.
  3. Copper will change colors and will require cleaning with a metal cleaner if you do not like the color changes.
  4. Steel will rust if exposed to the elements – to prevent rusting you can spray the piece with a clear polymer sealant, a non-rust spray paint, or oil the piece periodically.
  5. Steel is the heaviest of the metals and will require more careful hanging than the lighter metals – we recommend hanging heavier pieces by strategically placed nails or picture wire, while lighter pieces can be hung by heavy weight fishing line.
  6. Jerri’s art is wonderful for decorating your home, office, barn, garden or hanging on a fence!
